DCJS, Albany County Sheriff’s Office to distribute
free SAFE CHILD cards during Harlem Globetrotters performance

When the Harlem Globetrotters, known around the world as the “Ambassadors of Goodwill,” come to Albany next week, representatives from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and the Albany County Sheriff’s Office will be on hand to enroll as many children as possible in DCJS’ Operation SAFE CHILD program.

Operation SAFE CHILD provides parents or legal guardians with a free card that contains their child’s vital information, including date of birth, gender, height, weight and eye color, along with a photograph and fingerprints of both index fingers. If the parent or guardian wishes, that information is stored in a secure database so that it can be disseminated instantly if a child is abducted or lost.

Parents and guardians attending the Globetrotters performance at the Times Union Center on Tuesday, Feb. 26, with their children can obtain free SAFE CHILD cards from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., on the concourse level, front of the arena, Market Street side of the Citizens Bank Lounge.

Time is the greatest enemy if a child goes missing. Having up-to-date photographs and detailed information about a child can greatly assist law enforcement officials as they respond to a child's disappearance. To date, more than 200,000 children have been registered through Operation SAFE CHILD.

Founded in 1926, the Harlem Globetrotters have played in over 115 countries for more than 120 million fans. They surpass every other team in the history of sports for number of games played. Today they are best known for their comedic routines and ball-handling skills on the court, and their trademark song, "Sweet Georgia Brown."
