Officers Gallagher and Stock responded to a call in the Medford area from a caseworker who was concerned her client may have stopped taking his medication and had menaced his roommate with a fire extinguisher. Upon their arrival, the individual attacked the officers. As the officers sought to restrain him, he brandished a large hunting knife, ignored orders to drop the weapon and stabbed both officers repeatedly. Officer Stock fired his service weapon to end the attack, which resulted in both officers sustaining potentially life-threatening injuries. Despite losing substantial amounts of blood and suffering injuries to their arms and hands, the officers managed to perform first aid on themselves before being airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment. Their recoveries are ongoing.
