Overview

Timely and accurate crime statistics are essential to reducing crime in New York State. The Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) collects crime and arrest reports from over 500 New York State police departments and sheriffs’ offices. DCJS compiles these reports as New York’s official crime statistics and submits them to the FBI under the National Uniform Crime Reporting Program.

Crime reporting is a critical first step to understanding crime, facilitating communication between neighboring departments, and proactively addressing increases in crime. This can improve state and local law enforcement’s ability to gauge and react to current statewide crime trends.

Coded NYS Law File

DCJS has completed the process of moving its criminal history operations to an Oracle relational database. These are dynamic files; check frequently and download as necessary.

November 22, 2022 - In August 2022, the New York State Crime Reporting Unit fixed a defect in the state’s programming of NYSIBR Edit #762. The modified programming now reflects the literal explanation of Edit #762, which requires certain IBR offense codes to be linked to the Victim Type of Society/Public.

December 8, 2021 - New York State Executive Law (837-t and 837-v*2) requires all police departments, including the New York State Police, and sheriffs’ offices to report to DCJS incidents of officer-involved use of force and arrest-related deaths.

October 26, 2020 - Beginning December 1, 2020, all police departments and sheriffs’ offices and the New York State Police must submit use of force incidents that occur on or after November 1, 2020, through a new Use of Force Reporting Interface accessible through the eJustice New York Integrated Justice Portal (IJ Portal).

October 7, 2019 - Effective July 2019, the New York State Crime Reporting Program is now accepting Incident Based Reporting files that comply with the new 2019 NYSIBR data standards. Agencies that successfully transition to these new file standards will also be considered compliant with the National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS).

January 11, 2018 - DCJS has revised the New York State Incident Based Reporting (IBR) Program to comply with National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) standards. As part of the revisions, DCJS has modified the current NYSIBR monthly submission file layout to incorporate NIBRS data elements previously not collected by New York State and has aligned all variable codes with NIBRS specifications.
