The NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), Office of Public Safety is pleased to announce the availability of a popular training course for local corrections, Jail Time Credit and Calculation Training Course. This course will train correction officers and supervisors on the complex issue of calculating jail time and the credit each incarcerated individual is entitled.
This recently updated 2-day training is designed for corrections officers, records officers, and anyone tasked with
determining when an incarcerated individual will have completed the sentence ordered by a court. In addition to learning the applicable law, each student will be given hands on experience on calculating jail time including good time allowances, examples of forms used, and the tools needed to avoid liability. Intermixed throughout the course will be discussions on when to develop and implement local agency policy.
Course Topics:
- Importance of jail time.
- Applicable sections of Correction Law.
- Applicable sections of Penal Law.
- Explanation of good time allowance
- Definitions of jail time, warrants, types of sentences, etc.
- Situations and applications of jail time including scenarios.
- Differences between criminal sentences and civil confinements.
Certificates of completion for any DCJS hosted training event will be available for download for any police or peace officer listed on the NYS Police/Peace Officer Registry through the DCJS Acadis Portal.
Register
Pre-Registration is required. All interested parties must register at least three weeks prior to the course as seats are limited. The location of training, class times and safety guidelines will be provided through an email confirmation; those who do not register will not receive this important notification and will not be admitted to the training. Walk-ins and transferring of confirmation notices will not be permitted.
