Description

This course is designed for law enforcement officers seeking to enhance and refine their search warrant writing skills. Building upon concepts introduced in the Basic Course for Police Officers (BCPO), the training provides officers with a strong legal and practical foundation in the preparation, review, and execution of search warrants. Students will participate in hands-on practical exercises focused on developing probable cause and drafting clear, legally sufficient, and constitutionally sound search warrants that support effective criminal investigations and successful prosecutions.

This updated course reflects evolving legal standards, current case law, and modern investigative practices, including considerations involving digital evidence and electronic devices commonly encountered during criminal investigations. Proper search warrant preparation and execution are critical to protecting constitutional rights, preserving the integrity of investigations, and reducing the risk of evidentiary suppression or civil liability.

Highlights of the training will include:

  • Understanding search warrant documents
  • Development and articulation of probable cause
  • Drafting clear and legally sufficient search warrants
  • Search warrants involving digital evidence and electronic devices
  • Secondary elements and supporting documentation
  • Amending and correcting search warrants
  • Development of officer background and expertise to support probable cause
  • Review and judicial approval process
  • Jurisdictional considerations involving search warrants
  • Execution and return of search warrants
  • Sealing affidavits and protecting sensitive information
  • Practical search warrant writing exercises and case studies

Instruction will be provided by law enforcement and prosecution professionals with extensive backgrounds in criminal investigations, warrant preparation, and courtroom prosecution. Their collaborative perspective offers attendees practical insight into both the investigative and prosecutorial considerations essential to effective warrant preparation and execution.
