Course Description
This training emphasizes how trauma affects victim behavior and disclosure and focuses on techniques and practices designed to support individuals who have experienced trauma or been the victim of a crime. It emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and empathetic environment, using non-judgmental language, and being mindful of how trauma can affect a person’s responses. The goal is to build trust, reduce the risk of re-traumatization, and ensure the interview process is conducted in a manner that is both respectful and effective.
Thomas Gibbons is a recently retired, twenty-five-year veteran of the New York State Police. He served for over 19 years in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation as an Investigator and Senior Investigator. Thomas was assigned to the Campus Sexual Assault Victims Unit and served as the regional coordinator, acting as the liaison between the New York State Police and every private and state college and university in the eight counties of Western New York. He organized and implemented training for local police departments, prosecutors, and campus personnel responsible for responding to sexual assaults, dating and domestic violence, and stalking.
This one-day (8-hour) training event will cover the following topics:
- Trauma-Informed Response
- Disclosure
- Neurobiology of Trauma
- Incorporating Trauma-Informed Strategies into Rapport Building and De-escalation Practices
