Hate Crime Data

Under New York State’s Hate Crime Law (Penal Law Article 485), a person commits a hate crime when one of a specified set of offenses is committed targeting a victim because of a perception or belief about their race, color, national origin, ancestry, gender, religion, religious practice, age, disability, or sexual orientation. Hate crimes can target an individual, a group of individuals, public or private property, or society. 

DCJS collects information on hate crime incidents reported by law enforcement agencies through the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program.

The Hate Crime Data Dashboard provides hate crime data from 2010 to the present across regions, counties, and agencies by bias type and bias motivation.

DCJS is required by law to annually publish a report analyzing hate crime incidents and arrests reported to the agency.
