New York State’s Missing Children’s Day Poster Contest Winner

Hailey Morey, a fifth-grade pupil from Cicero, is the winner of this year's contest. The 11-year-old's drawing will represent New York State in the National Missing Children’s Day Poster Contest, an annual competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Morey, who attends Gillette Road Middle School in Onondaga County, depicted strong arms hugging a teddy bear and waiting for a missing child to return home. In a nod to her mother’s special education students, who have difficulty expressing themselves with words, she used the American Sign Language symbol for the word “hug.” She also drew a map in the background to illustrate that we are all connected by our goal of helping children and to encourage others to maintain hope.

New York's first-, second- and third-place posters and all qualifying contest entries will be displayed at the Empire State Plaza Concourse in May. The Missing Persons Clearinghouse also coordinates a ceremony in Albany that honors the contest winners .
