FACT SHEET: Women’s Leadership Institute
- The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services is sponsoring the Women’s Leadership Institute training as part of its mission to provide support, technical assistance and resources to local law enforcement agencies so they can better serve their communities. This is the first time the agency is sponsoring the training.
- The week-long training is designed to help participants identify and overcome challenges they may face to become effective law enforcement leaders and help prepare others for those positions. The curriculum integrates the art and science of leadership with professional and personal development strategies aimed at helping women advance to ranking positions within public safety organizations.
- A total of 50 police officers and sheriffs’ deputies are attending the training. The Division of Criminal Justice Services provided funding for 25 professionals from 20 agencies in New York State to attend:
- Police departments in Mamaroneck, Mount Hope, New Rochelle, New York City, Rochester, Saratoga Springs and Syracuse; and at Cornell University;
- Sheriffs’ offices in Niagara, Rensselaer and Steuben counties;
- Officers from police departments serving these SUNY schools: University at Albany, Binghamton University, University at Buffalo, Buffalo State; and SUNY Old Westbury; and
- Officers from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police, New York State Park Police, New York State Police, and the state Department of Environmental Conservation Police.
- Officers from other states also are attending.
- The Women’s Leadership Institute was developed by the International Association of Chiefs of Police and is based on its nationally recognized Leadership in Police Organizations training, which teaches that every officer, regardless of rank, is a leader and that agencies must foster a culture of leadership at all levels of responsibility. The Division of Criminal Justice Services offered the Leadership in Police Organization’s training for the first time last year.
- The training, which began Sunday, Oct. 8 and concludes on Friday, Oct. 13, features topics such as learning to lead; harnessing the power of differences; understanding motivation; effective communication and counseling; fair, impartial and ethical policing; professional development; and leading teams, organizations and change.
- The Institute is part of the Division of Criminal Justice Services’ Leadership Training Initiative, a series of 13 courses designed to help law enforcement executives and supervisors develop and refine leadership skills to meet the demands of modern policing.
- Made possible through a $250,000 federal grant, the Leadership Training Initiative features the most comprehensive series of leadership courses ever offered by the agency. Courses range in length from one day to three weeks; the Division of Criminal Justice Services expects to train approximately 1,500 officers statewide when the courses offered through the Initiative conclude next spring.
- The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (www.criminaljustice.ny.gov) is a multi-function criminal justice support agency with a variety of responsibilities, including law enforcement training; collection and analysis of statewide crime data; maintenance of criminal history information and fingerprint files; administrative oversight of the state’s DNA databank, in partnership with the New York State Police; funding and oversight of probation and community correction programs; administration of federal and state criminal justice funds; support of criminal justice-related agencies across the state; and administration of the state’s Sex Offender Registry.
